Maintenance on the Georgia Tax Center will occur Saturday, July 30th from 8:00am - 12:00pm. The Georgia Tax Center will be unavailable during those times. We apologize for any inconvenience.

There are two ways to receive an automatic 6-month extension to file your Georgia income tax return:

Get an extension to file your Federal return

You do not need to request an extension to file your Georgia return if you receive a Federal extension. The due date for filing your Georgia return will be automatically extended with an approved Federal extension. Attach a copy of Federal Form 4868 or the IRS confirmation letter (if you request a Federal extension electronically) to the Georgia return when filed. Contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or visit their website at www.irs.gov to obtain Form 4868 and additional extension information.

or

Submit Georgia Form IT-303, if you don't need a Federal extension

You must mail Form IT-303 before the statutory return due date and attach a copy to the return when filed. We will notify you only if your extension request is denied.

An extension to file cannot exceed 6 months and does not extend the date for paying the tax.

Tax must be mailed, along with Form IT-560, by the statutory due date for filing the return to avoid late payment penalty and interest. The amount paid should be entered on Form 500, Page 2, Line 20.

What to do if you haven’t filed your tax return

Need more time to prepare your federal tax return? This page provides information on how to apply for an extension of time to file. Please be aware that:

  • An extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes.
  • You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
  • You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return.

E-file Your Extension Form for Free

Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.

  • Filing this form gives you until October 15 to file a return.

    • If October 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is delayed until the next business day. Your return is considered filed on time if the envelope is properly addressed, postmarked, and deposited in the mail by the due date.

  • To get the extension, you must estimate your tax liability on this form and should also pay any amount due.

Get an extension when you make a payment

You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

Need more time to file your 2021 tax return?

Before filing for an IRS tax extension, make sure it’s right for you. Here are a few common reasons why you may need to push your deadline back:

  • More time needed to track down missing tax documents
  • Unexpected life event
  • Life’s been too busy

If you find yourself unable to complete your 2021 federal tax return by the tax deadline, you’ll first need to file an extension with the IRS to avoid any potential late-filing or late payment penalties. Filing an extension will allow you to push your deadline to October 17, 2022.

It’s important to keep in mind an extension only pushes back the due date for the filing of your tax documents. It does not give you extra time to pay on any taxes you may owe. If you believe you will owe money this year, you’ll need to estimate the amount after filing for an extension and make a payment by the filing deadline.

Option 1: E-file your federal tax extension in minutes with TurboTax Easy Extension

Using TurboTax Easy Extension, you can:

    • E-file your federal extension
    • Make a payment of any tax due directly from your checking or savings account
    • Print a PDF copy of your e-filed extension
    • Receive notifications when your extension has been accepted by the IRS
    • Get easy instructions on how to file a state extension by mail

Note: Once your extension is approved, you’ll have until October 17, 2022 to file your return. If you’re expecting a refund, it will not be processed until once you have completed your tax filing. If you think you owe, the estimated amount of taxes due will need to be paid to the IRS by the tax return filing due date.

Option 2: Print and mail your completed IRS extension form

If you’d rather mail your extension directly to the IRS, simply refer to IRS Form 4868: Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, complete and print the form, and send it to the IRS address for your state.

If you owe federal taxes, include your estimated payment with your Form 4868 and mail it—postmarked by April 18, 2022 to avoid any penalties or interest. Then complete and file your return on or before October 17, 2022.

State tax extension guidelines vary. To see detailed information about state extension filing deadlines and mailing addresses, select your state of interest from this state tax authority's website.

Remember, TurboTax Easy Extension can help you access the tax forms you need to file your state extension by mail.

If you've e-filed or mailed Form 4868 and need to pay by credit card, you can use one of several IRS approved Electronic Payment Methods. You can pay with your credit card online or by phone. File your complete return by October 17, 2022.

Cautions

  • If the IRS thinks your estimate of the amount of tax you owe is unreasonable, it may disallow your extension and assess a late-filing penalty.
  • If you underestimate the amount of tax you owe, you'll likely have to pay interest on whatever amount you fail to pay by the filing deadline.
  • If you pay less than 90% of the tax you owe, you'll end up owing a penalty of 0.5% of the underpayment every month until you pay the remaining balance. For example, if you pay $600 by the filing deadline, but discover when you complete your return that you really owe $1,000, you will usually owe 0.5% per month on the $400 that is overdue, or about $2 a month, until you pay the full amount owed.
