It might not be a national holiday yet, but Mean Girls Day marks a celebration of all things to do with the quintessential American high school movie.
It’s all thanks to one iconic scene in the movie that Mean Girls has its own special day.
When Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) starts at a new school, she develops a crush on Aaron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett). In a scene where Cady is sitting behind Aaron in class, he turns around to ask her what day it is. ‘It’s October 3rd’, she replies. Which means Aaron has acknowledged Cady’s existence. Which, in high school, means he loves her – right?
Now, every year on October 3rd, fans flock to social media to celebrate their favourite moments and quotes from the film.
When did Mean Girls come out?
The cult classic was released just over fifteen years ago. Yep, that’s right, fifteen years ago – wow, we feel old! It catapulted the careers of Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried into the Hollywood stratosphere when they starred in the movie alongside comedian Tina Fey and former child star Lindsay Lohan.
Unbelievably, Lindsay Lohan was just eighteen years old when the film came out! After the film’s release, she went on to release two studio albums, Speak and A Little More Personal, which were certified platinum and gold respectively. Rachel McAdams starred in another hit, The Notebook, in the same year and Amanda Seyfried would later star in Mamma Mia and Les Misérables.

What does ‘so fetch’ actually mean?
So many quotes from Mean Girls have become so ingrained in popular culture, that it’s hard to remember a time before the film.
‘You go Glen Coco!’ … ‘She doesn’t even go here!’ … ‘You can’t sit with us!’
And, of course, who could forget poor Gretchen Wieners, who was desperately trying to make ‘fetch’ happen. ‘Fetch’ is a slang term which Gretchen repeatedly uses throughout the film, hoping it will become a new it-word for ‘cool’ or ‘awesome’.
Well, arguably, Gretchen Wieners did make it happen. Like it or not, ‘fetch’ definitely became an iconic line from the movie!
