On a daily basis, people use several types of speech delivery to connect with others, influence decisions, and motivate change without realizing which occasions a specific method of speech delivery should be used.

Today we will talk about 4 types of speech delivery that are commonly used and sometimes happen almost unnoticed.

• Manuscript Speech
• Memorized Speech
• Extemporaneous Speech
• Impromptu Speech

All these types of speech delivery require that we have pre-knowledge about the subject we want to present, even if we are not experts, we need to know enough about the topic in order to present it meaningfully.

4 Different Types of Speech Delivery Methods

1. Manuscript Speech or Presentation

The manuscript speech is a method of delivering a speech in which we have the information generally in writing, that will be used to drive all the presentation.

If we play the speaker’s role, we need to have time before the presentation starts to read the guide and get to know a bit about what we are going to talk about it.

Here we don’t need to memorize the information as it happens in the memorized speech, but we need to know things such as what it is, how it occurs, and why we are bringing it up so that we don’t get lost and don’t pass the feeling that we are lost to the audience.

What you see when watching the news is an example of a manuscript speech; the reporter needs to have seen or heard the story before delivering it because he/she gives the information; unlike the viewers, he/she cannot be surprised.

It is common for the reporter to have a teleprompter or paper that will serve as a guide to the order and key themes that should be mentioned, and it cannot come across to the viewers as if the reporter is READING.

2. Memorized Speech or Presentation

The memorized speech is a method of delivering a speech in which the whole essence and goal are about using the memory as help. The speaker here usually has a paper in which with some notes and an outline of the presentation to serve as a guide.

In no instance, the audience expects that the speaker has a paper or carry notes to use to recall the content, so it usually is prepared with some time because the information is something the speaker needs to own.

Poetry Contests are typical examples of a memorized speech. Here the poet writes about a subject that he chose or was chosen, but then he needs to present in front of an audience and have recorded in the memory everything he is going to say.

Examples of situations we may find a memorized speech:

• Poetry Contests;
• Lectures/ Conferences;
• Spelling competitions.

3. Extemporaneous Speech or Presentation

For the delivery of an extemporaneous speech, we expect that the speaker has some background knowledge about the subject he or she is going to present, but ALSO that he has his own opinion formed about it.

The opinion can be formed right there, but to discuss the subject, the speaker needs to have heard about it at least twice or more because the people we are going to interact with know about it, so it wouldn’t sit well if the presenter was the least knowledgeable person in the room.

It is common to see extemporaneous speeches in situations like debates; here, the orator goes there knowing already what he will talk about. 

It can happen that the presenter will speak alone or with a group of people who will disagree with him while receiving questions from the audience.

Examples of situations we may find an extemporaneous speech:

• Debates;
• Business Meetings;
• Running for elections;\

3. Impromptu Speech

In this speech, we are called to deliver a speech without prior announcement, and because of that, the audience expects that the content comes out naturally and properly.

If we deliver an impromptu speech, we are expected to have specific knowledge about the subject we will pitch about and look into paper or notes that are not shared.

Going to a job interview is often an impromptu speech. The recruiting enterprise needs that the applicant has a basic knowledge about where to work, know about his professional skills, talk about them, and maybe show.

We can improve our speech in training how the brain can answer and form an opinion on diverse subjects. 

We can read some books, find some friends in real life or online to make some cultural and social exchange that would allow us to know about a different subject in diverse ways.

Giving an impromptu speech requires that we pop up from content to content and think about it. If we don’t have much background knowledge, this can be a problem because we won’t know how to wing with it.

Examples of situations we may find an impromptu speech:

• Job interviews;
• Toasts;
• Knowing someone new.

Speeches are more common than we think, and some of them can be performed without us even knowing the structure, and because of that, not know how to behave and improve when the day occurs.

None speech is impossible to face or to get ready to overcome these things by fulfilling our daily lives with people and activities that are meaningful and useful to our future.  

Reading and talking with different types of people can form opinions that may become an impromptu speech.
